For those who like to travel and see beautiful places, Chiapas has surprises in store with its magnificent historical monuments.

Among the riches of these lands, we will mention some of the most significant, starting with the state capital. In Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the Cathedral of San Marcos stands out, a Dominican foundation from the 16th century, with a long construction history. To the east of this city is Chiapa de Corzo, the former capital of the Chiapas, there you can enjoy the square and the surrounding portals, dating from the 18th century, the beautiful source of Mudejar inspiration, a work from the 16th century considered unique in its kind, the temple and convent of Santo Domingo, which is a beautiful example of 16th century religious architecture.

Those who like the architecture of the 19th century in the municipality of Cintalapa can visit the La Providencia textile complex, which still conserves part of its facilities. For those interested in popular expressions of architecture, they can visit Copainalá with a beautiful urban appearance and remains of a 17th century Dominican temple. Very close to there is Tecpatán, seat of the most important Dominican convent established in the 16th century as a center of evangelization of the Zoque province.

Towards the east of the capital, in an old Tzeltal town, are the ruins of the Copanaguastla temple, a beautiful Renaissance-style building.

Along the route of the old Camino Real, in the region of the Central Plateau, you will find Comitán, the land of Belisario Domínguez and Rosario Castellanos. Its historic center has preserved its traditional appearance with its old houses and beautiful monuments such as the Santo Domingo church.

To the east of the city you should visit the temple of San Sebastián and the old market, which was built in the year 1900.

To the southeast is San José Coneta, which preserves the remains of a Dominican temple with a façade that, in the opinion of experts, is one of the best examples of Chiapas colonial art.

Finally, in the Los Altos region, you cannot miss one of the colonial jewels of Mexico: San Cristóbal de las Casas. Here you can appreciate beautiful civil and religious buildings such as the Municipal Palace, a sober neoclassical construction from the 19th century; the houses of the conquerors Diego de Mazariegos and Andrés de Tovilla, known respectively as “Casa de Mazariegos” and “Casa de la Sirena”, the Cathedral of San Cristóbal Mártir, built in the 17th century and completed almost in the 20th century, which shows an interesting mix of styles.

There are many more monuments to enjoy in Chiapas, but they are not mentioned due to lack of space. The above is just a taste.
