It was founded in 1537 by the friars Juan de Sevilla and Antonio de Roa, although the construction was carried out between 1539 and 1560.

The temple presents a severe image of a fortress, with high walls crowned by battlements and its façade is in the Plateresque style with a composition similar to that of the Acolman temple. The façade is finished off with a large belfry with seven clearings, which gives great enhancement to the whole. The interior of the temple preserves five altarpieces with good quality paintings on religious subjects and the main altarpiece, has paintings alluding to the life of Jesus. In the annexed convent you can see remains of paint on its walls; in the corner vaults with the images of the evangelists and the doctors of the church, and on the staircase, there are the remains of two allegories of the triumphs of Chastity and Patience.
