On the west side of the old Alameda de Santa María, is the building that was the headquarters of the National Geological Institute.

Its construction was carried out from 1901 to 1906 in Renaissance style, being the architect Carlos Herrera López; In the architectural work, the quarry brought from Los Remedios was used and in the imposing façade there are decorative elements based on figures with paleontological, botanical and zoological themes carved in high and low relief. Although the exterior image of the complex is majestic, the interior does not detract from its sumptuousness since the access doors are made of carved cedar with beveled glass, the lobby floor is a wonderful carpet made with Venetian mosaics and the staircase is a unique and beautiful example. of the art nouveau style.

The museum brings together collections of minerals, rocks and fossils distributed in eight rooms, exhibiting a mammoth skeleton in the main one. On the upper floor there are ten large-format paintings by José María Velasco that illustrate geological eras, and several drawings by Doctor Atl with the theme of the Paricutín volcano eruption.
