It is estimated that both, due to their proximity, cover an area of ​​393,074 hectares.

Apart from the extensive surrounding region considered as a forest protection zone for the upper basin of the Usumacinta and Tulijá rivers, in total it comprises more than two and a half million hectares. The landscape of this biosphere reserve is made up of a large number of plant populations such as high and medium forests, pine and oak forests and savannas, while the study of the fauna determined the existence of more than 600 species of vertebrates, among which are several felines, more than 300 species of birds, 65 species of fish and 85 of reptiles that live in the heart of a territory of incomparable beauty.

Access by dirt roads to the southeast of Palenque or by plane from the towns of Palenque, Ocosingo or Tenosique.
