Anastasio Bustamante, was born in Jiquilpan, Michoacán in 1780. He studied medicine at the Mining College and lives in San Luis Potosí.

He joined the royalist army under the orders of Calleja, obtaining the rank of lieutenant. He adheres to the Plan of Iguala and soon gains the trust of Iturbide. Later he is elected member of the Provisional Board of Government and Captain General of the Eastern and Western provinces. In 1829 he assumed the vice-presidency at the behest of Guerrero, whom he overthrew shortly after proclaiming the Plan of Jalapa. Assumes command of the executive as vice president from January 1830 to August 1832.

A year later he is arrested and shortly after released and exiled to Europe. At the end of the Texas War (1836) he arrived in Mexico to take over the presidency which he held until 1839. He assumed military command during the War of Pastries with France and returned to the presidency for a short season, as he was again overthrown and sent to Europe. He returned in 1844 and became president of Congress two years later. When peace was established between Mexico and the United States, he received the order to put Guanajuato and Aguascalientes in order and to pacify the Sierra Gorda. He died in San Miguel Allende in 1853.
