We present some interesting information about this popular sanctuary founded in the 16th century to prevent the indigenous people from continuing to worship a strange deity in the nearby caves and mountains.

This is one of the busiest temples in the country, as it enjoys great fame among the devotees of the image of the Holy Lord of Chalma that is venerated there and which is said to be very miraculous.

The sanctuary was founded in the 16th century as a response by religious authorities to the acts of the indigenous people who worshiped a deity in the nearby caves. The current temple was completed in 1683 due to the initiative of Fray Diego de Velázquez, although its architecture has been modified over the years.

Today it has a severe neoclassical façade, and inside, decorated in the same style, there are some sets of sculptures of saints and good quality paintings with religious themes, probably from the 18th century. Of course, the miraculous image of the Lord of Chalma, the sculpture of San Miguel Arcángel and a very beautiful piece with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe stand out.
