It is an important refuge for the birds of the Mexican Caribbean.

Coordinates: It is just 30 km north of Cancun, and separated from the continent by 12 km from the Caribbean Sea.

Treasures: The island is the most important refuge for seabirds in the Mexican Caribbean, where herons, pelicans, frigates, cormorants, pigeons and dozens of other birds breed. Its waters are home to coral reefs with rocky areas and caves; mangroves, coastal dunes and reptiles such as gray iguanas and sea turtles abound on land. Here there is no fresh water, so there are no mammals. It has vestiges of "concheros" and pre-Columbian ceramics, as it was part of the pre-Hispanic shipping route between the coast and the Caribbean islands.

How to get there: From Cancun you can get there by boats or tourist yachts, which depart from Playa Linda, Puerto Juárez and Isla Mujeres. The trip is 2 hours.

How to enjoy it: Tourist activities include guided tours of well-defined trails, diving or snorkeling, and boat rides with an expert bird guide.
