The history of Villa del Carbón dates back to 200 BC. when it was occupied by the Otomi, under the name of Nñontle which means "Top of the Hill", forming the Chiapan and Xilotepec region, which later would be dominated by the Aztecs. In 1713 it was separated from Chiapan under the name of Congregación de la Peña de Francia. Previously, this population was dedicated to the extraction of coal; thus out of habit, little by little his current name remained.
