Construction of the Cathedral of Morelia began in 1660 and was completed in 1744, after the previous one suffered a fire. Learn more about its history!

When the bishopric of Michoacán was founded in 1536, it had as its headquarters, first, the town of Tzintzuntzan, then Pátzcuaro and finally the city of Valladolid, where it settled in 1580. The cathedral at that time was preyed upon by fire. reason why the construction of a new one began in 1660, according to the project of Vicencio Barroso de la Escayola; This was completed in 1744. The style of its façade is sober baroque with an abundant and excellent set of molded boards, valances and pilasters instead of columns, achieving an attractive ornamental complex that includes its tall towers. On the facades there are reliefs with scenes from the life of Christ, and the access doors are covered with beautifully carved and painted leather. The interior is neoclassical in style and it highlights the choir organ and a beautiful carved silver manifestator that is located on the main altar and that belongs to the 18th century.
