“Los Petenes” Biosphere Reserve

It has an area of ​​282,857 hectares and covers the municipalities of Calkiní, Hecelchakán, Tenabo and Campeche.

Petenes (complex habitats like islands) are located in this reserve, where tree species such as chechén, mahogany, fig, palm, chit and mangroves of different genera grow, which allow the permanence of at least 473 plant species, 22 of them endemic (typical of the region), 3 threatened species, 2 rare and 5 belonging to the group of species under special protection.

Regarding its fauna, we find the river crocodile, the alligator, the candida heron, the white ibis and the white-winged duck, the Yucatecan parrot, the stork, the conchero, gray and snail hawks, the howler monkey, the bear anthill, the four-eyed opossum, the old man from the mountain, the white-tailed deer and the manatee and the manatee.
