The town of San Ignacio is one of the most visited sites from there to undertake excursions to the areas where cave paintings are preserved.

In the surroundings and within the Sierra de San Francisco to the north of this town, more than 300 sites have been located, while in other mountains south of Mulegé it is estimated that there are at least 60 other sites with remains of paintings.

To the left, 9 kilometers east of San Ignacio, a winding dirt road runs along the riverbed of the Santa María river; The route is long and it is not advisable to do it without the company of an experienced guide, as you have to bring equipment, pack animals, water and food for the days you are scheduled to be in the area.

In this region, you will find places of unparalleled beauty among deep canyons at the bottom of which run streams flanked by tall palm trees and guarded by rocky elevations full of semi-desert vegetation. This is how places such as Santa Martha, Las Tinajas, El Sauce, San Nicolás, San Gregorio and San Gregorito will be seen, where the common constant are the hunting scenes full of human and animal figures, among which several of the fauna are distinguished typical of the region, such as the bighorn sheep, the hare, birds, fish and even whales, all represented in ocher and black colors along large stretches of rock and shelters in the intermediate parts of the steep elevations.

San Ignacio-Santa Rosalía

There are 75 kilometers to Santa Rosalía, a commercial, tourist and fishing port developed around 1885 by the French who owned a concession to work a copper mine. This aspect gave the site a large part of the physiognomy that it still preserves, as part of the civil buildings that show a certain French style. Among the attractions of this place, are the famous church designed by Gustave Eiffel built of prefabricated steel pieces shipped from France, and the breakwater built with large blocks of slag resulting from the smelting process in the old mine. In this place the ferry to the port of Guaymas, Sonora, provides round trip service.
