SCIENTIFIC NAME: Gnaphalium oxyphyllum DC.

FAMILY: Compositae.

This species is used in several regions of the center and north of the country such as the Federal District, Morelos, Tlaxcala, Sonora and the State of Mexico because it is very useful in traditional medicine. Its use to treat respiratory diseases such as coughs, flu, asthma, bronchitis, throat infections and chest problems is highly recommended. The treatment consists of cooking the branches with flowers, sweetened with honey, to be drunk warm before going to sleep. In cases of chronic cough and flu, it is ingested three times a day, or on an empty stomach for a week. In addition, cooking with milk together with other plants is very useful for these conditions. It is also widely used in gastric disorders, ulcers and intestinal parasites, where the treatment consists of cooking the plant.

Herbaceous that measures between 30 and 80 cm in height, with a hairy stem. The leaves are narrow and silky in appearance. Its fruits are small and the seeds are abundant. Its origin is unknown, but in Mexico it lives in warm, semi-warm and temperate climates. It grows in abandoned lands and is associated with tropical deciduous, sub-evergreen, evergreen, xerophilous scrub, mesophilic mountain, oak and mixed pine forest.
