LA GUELAGUETZA

The "Monday of the Hill" is the maximum celebration of Oaxacans, which is celebrated on the last two Mondays in July. It is an ancient tradition with pre-Hispanic roots related to the ceremonies of gratitude to the gods for good harvests.

La Guelaguetza gathers delegations from all regions of the state in Cerro de Fortín, which offer the best of their products, their dresses, their music and their dances. At the Camino Real hotel you can enjoy, every Friday night, a recreation of this event.

DAY OF THE DEATH

On November 1 and 2, the Day of the Dead is celebrated in Oaxaca, and it is customary to put altars in houses, dedicated to the dead, and to decorate graves in cemeteries with marigold flowers.

THE CALENDAS

Less known but very showy is this party that is held to announce the arrival of Christmas. It is dedicated to the godparents of the Child God, responsible for taking him in procession from his home to the neighborhood temple. The parishioners prepare a float for a parade that ends at the Cathedral.
