From our archive we rescued this portrait that one of our experts made of the renowned Tlaxcala muralist who took more than 40 years to paint his work "The History of Tlaxcala ..."!

Talk about the painter's work Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin (February 11, 1922 - September 14, 2007) is to enter a long journey, since it has been almost seven decades (this article is from 2001) since this unique artist from Tlaxcala began to capture in drawings, engravings and paintings a vision rich in color and content.

In his hometown, Tlacatecpac de San Bernardino ContlaSurrounded by a favorable environment in the father's house, Xochitiotzin shows his first gifts for the plastic arts at the young age of thirteen. His training begins in the family's artisan workshop and is confirmed and enriched in the Academy of Fine Arts of Puebla, to culminate his artistic maturity in a long and fruitful production.

The themes that the teacher Xochitiotzin has dealt with throughout his career continue to be recurrent, such as history, landscape, festivals and carnivals, customs and the daily life of the town, without ceasing to address the religious theme. These themes are embodied in a figurative realism that the artist knew how to assimilate from the Mexican school of painting. His works not only show a broad knowledge of basic techniques; In the rigor of his strokes, in the mastery of his brushstroke and in the virtuous handling of luminosity when applying color, it is evident that he has studied the work of artists such as José Guadalupe Posada or Agustín Arrieta, passing through Francisco Goitia and stopping intensely in the work of the great Mexican muralists, particularly that of Diego Rivera.

Investigations have been a characteristic of the work of this great painter. An example of this is the constant and disciplined study of his roots, which has made him a scholar who knows the history and culture of his native state, which has led him to be an outstanding professor and lecturer.

All this preparation is the cornerstone that supported him in the realization of one of his best-known monumental works, the mural "The history of Tlaxcala and its contribution to the Mexican", which covers an area of more than 450 m2 of the walls of the beautiful Government Palace of Tlaxcala. Here the artist achieves that his strokes and colors are vital and warm conductors of a force that captures the attention of any spectator. With its vigorous realism and surprising coloring, it awakens a double emotion in the public: reflection, which arises through its historical and human theme, and amazement, due to its very particular way of handling color.

Close to eighty years of age, Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin (died in 2007) continues to devote himself intensely and daily to his creative work.
