Nothing remained of T'ho that reminded the Castilian translation of Mérida, as the Spanish named the city that kept the vestiges of the Roman world. Much of the viceregal Mérida has been lost, fortunately preserving some outstanding elements.
The Cathedral of Lossia (photo: Ignacio Guevara), the oldest in continental America, was started in 1561 by Pedro de Aulestía and finished by Miguel de Aguero in 1598. Its factory will jealously guard the Renaissance purism. A large arch that rides on the buttresses will shelter the main portal, composed of paired pilasters topped by a timid pediment and crowned by pronounced finials. A splendid shield that was from Spain and now encompasses the Mexican imperial eagle, it is undoubtedly its best decoration contrasting with the simplicity of the choir window.
