Few know that this imposing construction, in the Baroque style, was originally the parish of the city, until in 1859 the diocese of Zacatecas was erected, and it became a Cathedral.

Built mostly between 1731 and 1752 by Domingo Ximénez Hernández, it was dedicated on August 15, 1752 and consecrated in 1841 by Fray Francisco García Diego, Bishop of the Californias. Its south tower was raised in 1785; while the north, which seems authentically baroque, was completed at the beginning of the 20th century.

Originally this was the parish of the city, but it became its Cathedral when the diocese of Zacatecas was erected in 1859. Its interior is relatively austere. It has neoclassical altarpieces that replaced the originals in the 19th century, and notable carvings both on the thick columns that separate the three naves, and on the keystones of all the arches.
