The Puebla Valley is guarded by four majestic and superb guardians ...

The Popocatépetl, the Iztaccíhuatl, La Malinche and the Citlaltépetl or Pico de Orizaba, the highest volcanoes in Mexican territory. Going along the superhighway to Atlixco, on clear days, when the atmosphere is crystal, you can admire all of them, like a gigantic and spectacular crown.

The legend says that many years ago Popocatepetl, a handsome 25-year-old young man, and Iztaccíhuatl, a 16-year-old brunette girl, beautiful and with beautiful black eyes, were in love, and asked their uncles for Tiotón (today Teotón) and their aunts. Santa María Tecajete and Santa María Zapoteca, who were to ask them in marriage to the Cuatlapan, offering flowers and bread to him. But their marriage was disapproved of by the gods, who enchanted them and turned them into hills and volcanoes.

Then Teyotzin, his grandfather, intervened, but it was also turned into a hill; The same fate ran the Citlaltépetl who was jealous, because he also wanted to marry the Iztaccihuatl. And there they all stayed, although Popo and Izta have Cerro Gordo, which is their “eagle” that takes care of them at night and by day.
