The United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization has incorporated this millennial Totonac ceremony into its distinguished list of intangible cultural treasures of humanity.

As many of us know, the wealth of a country is not only found in the things that man has made with his hands, we can also recognize it in the culture, customs and traditions that many times we cannot see or feel, but that we do distinguish as cultural treasures unique to peoples who have reached a level of global significance.

Such is the case of our country, which recently added three cultural treasures to the UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity list: the ancient ceremonial of “Los Voladores”, originally from Papantla, Veracruz; the “Places of memory and living traditions of the Otomí-Chichimecas of Tolimán: the Peña de Bernal, guardian of a sacred territory”, and “The indigenous festivals dedicated to the dead”.

These appointments are at a good time as they once again place Mexico among the main countries that have contributed the most material and intangible cultural heritage to humanity. Let us therefore celebrate the richness and cultural vastness of our country.
