In the midst of the great difficulties that surrounded the founding of Monterrey four hundred years ago, the construction of the Cathedral began around 1626, and it was not until 1800 that the work on the Baroque style portal and the first body of the tower was completed. .

The sobriety of its design, the color of the quarry and the height of its three-section tower impress the visitor, who finds in these lines the biography of a wild region dominated by the will of its inhabitants. The visit is extremely interesting if one takes into account the quality and beauty of the paintings kept in the sacristy, all of them made during the colonial period, as well as the shelves and the fine wood seats of the chapter house and the enormous oil painting de las Ánimas painted in 1767. The chapel of the tabernacle is also very beautiful, where the embossed silver front stands out, an anonymous work from the 18th century.

The murals in the presbytery, the work of the painter Ángel Zárraga (1886-1946), deserve special mention; Made between 1942 and 1946, these murals stand out for their originality, and the color they achieve creates an atmosphere of transparency that renounces contrasts and that speaks of a painter of great sensitivity and talent.
