SCIENTIFIC NAME: RED CEDAR. Cedrela odorata Linnaeus.

Family: Meliaceae.

Cedar receives a medicinal use in the center and south of the country in the states of Michoacán, Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, Campeche, Yucatán and Chiapas, where it is recommended as a treatment for dental discomfort, for which it is placed in the affected part a piece of the ground root of this tree. Its use is also frequent to lower the temperature, since some branches are boiled with enough water to bathe; to treat problems such as diarrhea, stomach pain and intestinal parasites, by cooking made from the root and the leaves. In cases of external infections, it is recommended to apply the macerated root as a poultice on the affected part. On the other hand, in some regions it is used to treat whitish spots on the skin, in this case the crushed leaves are placed for several days.

Tree up to 35 m tall, with a robust stem and cracked bark. It has small leaves and the flowers are in clusters, which produce globose nut-like fruits. It is native to Mexico and Central America, where it is distributed in warm and semi-warm climates. It grows associated with the tropical deciduous, sub-deciduous, sub-evergreen and evergreen forests.
