Corn is 7,000 years old. Mesoamerican cultures based their economy on its cultivation. Its importance lies, to this day, in being a staple food and a grass with great medicinal properties. In a large part of the country it has various applications, especially in kidney diseases such as kidney inflammation, stones and urine disease, for this purpose the corn heads are cooked and the resulting water is drunk as tea. The cooking of these is used as a diuretic, to increase blood pressure and reduce inflammation of the kidney, in addition, corn hairs are used against liver diseases such as hepatitis and heart disease. Also, this plant, which is cultivated in much of Mexico, is considered antispasmodic and anti-hemorrhagic.

Plant that reaches up to 4 m in height, has a hollow stem and elongated narrow leaves that surround it. Its flowers are born in the form of a cluster and the fruits or ears have hard grains of different colors. It lives in hot and cold climates. It grows associated with the tropical deciduous, sub-deciduous and evergreen forest, xerophilous scrub, mountain mesophilic forests, oak and mixed pine.
