Originally from the city of Aguascalientes, this engraver and illustrator is the author of the famous Catrina, the gloomy but funny character who starred in several of the works of the master Diego Rivera.

Extraordinary draftsman and engraver born in Aguascalientes in 1852. From a very young age he began in satirical drawing. Because of the bold illustrations that appeared in the local publication El Jicote, Posada had to leave his hometown. Based in León, Guanajuato, he made engravings and worked in a secondary school as a lithography teacher.

At the age of 35, Posada arrived in Mexico City, where he opened his own workshop and met the printer Antonio Venegas Arroyo, with whom he would collaborate tirelessly in the task of informing the people of the most diverse events, using original and fun ways. Among other things, Posada illustrated popular bullfights that dealt with political events, gruesome crimes, accidents and even predictions of the end of the world.

His genius gave life to innumerable skulls and skeletons through which the artist exercised an acute social criticism of Mexico in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Jose Guadalupe Posada it powerfully influenced the Mexican art of subsequent generations. His talent and originality are now recognized in various countries.

José Guadalupe Posada Museum

Annexed to the old and popular temple of Señor del Encino and occupying its former curial house, this unique museum is dedicated to the controversial personality of the Mexican engraver José Guadalupe Posada.

The interior of the museum is made up of two rooms: the first contains a permanent exhibition of Posada's work, set with some of his original engravings, clichés (engravings in lead with a burin), zincographs (engraved on zinc plate), reproductions of others on paper, photographs of the famous photographer Don Agustín Víctor Casasola and newspaper clippings from the revolutionary era.
