It was founded in Otomí territory around 1536, although the erection of the complex was the work of Fray Juan de Sevilla, between the years 1542 and 1562.

The facade of the temple is in a very sober Plateresque style, with paired columns in the first body, with the medallions of Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the door. Inside, the side chapels stand out, one of them with a beautiful stone-carved ogee arch, and the presbytery, with its Gothic ribbed vault. On the left side of the temple the open chapel stands out, placed in a curious way at the height of the choir between two buttresses. The annexed cloister is of great beauty, in a Plateresque style, with reminiscences of the Elizabethan in its columns. It keeps an excellent sample of mural painting with themes related to the Passion of Christ and on the staircase you can see a beautiful pictorial program in which you can see passages from the life of Saint Augustine and a rare representation of him surrounded by six Greek philosophers who are : Cicero, Pythagoras, Seneca, Plato, Socrates and Aristotle.
