In 1529 the Franciscan friars arrived in Cuernavaca and immediately began the construction of a convent complex that, like all of its order, is characterized by its architectural sobriety and its fortress aspect.

In the Cathedral of La Asunción, the fresco paintings made in the 17th century stand out, which recreate, based on simple lines of oriental influence, the arrival of the Franciscan missionaries to the East and the martyrdom of Felipe de las Casas, that is, San Felipe de Jesús, the first Mexican saint.

The convent complex is complemented by a spacious two-story cloister, the Capilla de la Tercera Orden, later built, the Capilla del Carmen and the open chapel, also from the 16th century. A visit to the Cathedral of Cuernavaca, in the heart of the city, is a must for all those who are interested in learning more about the history of the state of Morelos.
