It is said that Columbus was originally from Genoa, and that he started in the navy at the age of 14.
In 1477, Europe's leading shipping power was established in Portugal. Convinced that the Earth was spherical, he proposed to Juan II of Portugal that he make a trip to the West to reach the Indies, a project that did not receive the expected response. Three years later he went to Spain in search of the patronage of Fernando and Isabel de Castilla, the Catholic Monarchs, who initially denied him the funds for his company. After many setbacks, the monarchs decided to help him, leaving Puerto de Palos on August 3, 1492.
After two months of sailing, on October 12 the lookout Rodrigo de Triana sighted land (Guanahani Island). Columbus made three more trips to the "Indies", where he believed he had arrived. After his last trip and because of the intrigues of the court, he remained in the most absolute misery; Sick and forgotten, Columbus died on May 20, 1506, unaware that he had discovered a new continent.
