He participated in the conspiracy of Valladolid in 1809 and moved to Querétaro where he attended the meetings of the magistrate Miguel Domínguez and his wife.

In September 1810, San Miguel commanded the Queen's regiment of Dragoons. There he is informed that the conspiracy has been betrayed. He goes to Dolores and reports what happened to Allende and Hidalgo, so the uprising is advanced.

He apprehends several realistic characters and is commissioned to watch over the Spanish prisoners. Participate in the battle of Monte de las Cruces. March to Guanajuato and Zacatecas with Allende.

He was taken prisoner in Acatita de Baján and shot in Chihuahua in June 1811. His head was exhibited in the Alhóndiga de Granaditas until 1821. Two years later he is declared a national hero.
