The two distinctive landscapes of Durango have corners considered world heritage: on the part of the desert, the Bolson de Mapimí, and on the side of the mountains, La Michilía, both biosphere reserves.
Durango is part of the great Chihuahuan Desert, and its wealth is manifested in the Bolson de Mapimí, a great orographic depression that keeps among its living treasures the largest land tortoise in Mexico, the roadrunner and the kangaroo rat, the puma, the mule deer and the golden eagle; to the governor and candelilla shrubs, yucca, mesquite, nopaleras and other cacti that are also elements of Duranguense natural scenery.
The puzzling mysteries of the Zone of Silence are combined with those of numerous fossils in some regions of this ancient sea. Shiny stones such as quartz, agates and geodes confuse their brilliance with those of precious metals, such as those from the Ojuela mine.
Durango also has underground wonders, the caves, which in the Sierra del Rosario are peculiar due to their reddish color due to the abundance of iron minerals.
But not everything is desert. There is also water, which runs with force and flows gracefully. Several rivers cross the entity, such as the famous and important Nazas, which feeds the productive lagoon region, and from various springs cold or hot waters flow, some sulfurous, used for our delight in spas.
The flat roads become steep in the sierra de sierras, the Sierra Madre Occidental, which in its Duranguense portion forms a single united and compact body in the central part, with peaks that rise to more than 3,000 meters above sea level. . You only have to travel the highway that connects the state capital with Mazatlán to check these heights, especially in the section called Espinazo del Diablo, from whose peaks the mountains seem to become higher and the canyons deeper. Not far away, in Mexiquillo, the rocks became protagonists due to their peculiar eroded shapes.
In the vicinity of Zacatecas, the La Michilía Biosphere Reserve is another of the mountainous riches of the state, characterized by its marked unevenness in the soil, numerous streams, several lagoons located on the plateaus and lush pine and oak forests, enriched all with its exclusive fauna, such as the white-tailed deer, the Mexican wolf and the wild turkey.
With such a wealth of spectacular scenery, who can doubt that Durango is a movie state?
