The sanctuary located in Ocampo is open to the public, as well as many others located in these entities where lepidopterans tend to hibernate to protect their young from the boreal winter that affects the forests of southern Canada, where they originate.

As has happened for years, the monarch butterfly sanctuaries have begun to open their doors so that the public can appreciate the unique spectacle of observing this unique species that migrates every fall from the forests of southern Canada and the Northern United States to spend the winter in the temperate fir forests of the states of Michoacán and the State of Mexico.

The first sanctuaries to be opened were El Rosario and Sierra Chincua, followed by Cerro Huacal and Altamirano, all located in Michoacán, in the surroundings of Zitácuaro and Ocampo, in which ecological sanitation work has previously been carried out so as not to endanger your guests.

In mid-2008, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve was declared a World Heritage Site, along with the Magical Town of San Miguel de Allende, increasing the possibilities for the federal government to invest in greater conservation projects of the sanctuaries that make it up
