Ixtapan means in Nahuatl language "on the salt", its first inhabitants were the Matlatzincas; for them, salt was highly valued, it was traded by barter. When the Aztec emperor Axayácatl conquered the region, the settlers paid him a tribute of two thousand bags of salt. Due to its colonial heritage, Ixtapan de la Sal, joined the Program of "The Hundred Colonial Cities" in 1997, making it one of the most attractive in the State of Mexico.

Typical

The wealth of Ixtapan de la Sal is also in the skillful hands of its people who with excellent carvings in copal, coamoque, guamuchil and cedar wood, form animals, toys and musical instruments. From the pottery you get crockery, pots, jugs, vases and flowerpots. All this in the towns of Tecomatepec and Los Naranjos, in the municipal market and in the flea market on Sundays

Parish of the Assumption

With a superb Plateresque style, it was built by the Franciscan friars in the 16th century. It has an atrial wall adorned with pinnacular finials and openings that form several arches. Its façade has a tower and a portal decorated in the Tequitqui style, that is, the indigenous interpretation of European forms; by the time of its completion it can be considered as the last example of this style. The Mudejar and Renaissance styles can also be seen on the cover. Inside the parish, there is a finely carved baroque-style pulpit made of stewed wood and a life-size cane Christ, known as the “Lord of Forgiveness”.

For lovers of art and historical monuments, the Parroquia de la Asunción is an excellent example of the finesse with which stone was worked. A legend has been created from the figure of this Christ, and they go back to the time when the Franciscan friars brought him to the parish. They rested under a tree surrounding the image to protect it from the wolves that soon arrived, but the animals instead of attacking, lay down and continued on their way.
