TLALMANALCO: CHARMING TOWN IN THE STATE OF MEXICO

The industrial impulse represented by the San Rafael Factory raised this region to the forefront of the country, the company was considered the most important paper factory in Mexico and the number one in Latin America from 1930 to 1970. At that time it manufactured 100 tons per day of 200 kinds of paper. The firm step of the company was only interrupted in 1914 when the Zapatistas occupied the factory, and manufacturing resumed in 1920.

CONVENT OF SAN LUIS OBISPO

This religious construction is one of the best preserved wonders produced by the New Spain Baroque. Upon arrival, you are greeted by five arches carved with capitals that are topped with beautiful bas-reliefs and a border that follows the line of the arches filled with profusely decorated human figures. Inside it keeps a lavish Churrigueresque altarpiece carved in cedar wood that represents a scene from the Visitation of the Virgin; the cloister of the convent also has frescoes profusely illustrated with plant, animal and human figures. Detail by detail this construction for sumptuousness and elegance, is recognized as a masterpiece of viceregal architecture.

Like all convents, it has a church, in front a large atrium and its open chapel worked in a fine Plateresque style of such magnificence that it was named Royal Chapel.

OPEN CHAPEL

In this place where masses were celebrated for the unconverted natives; there are magnificent carvings and ostentatious decorations, a reflection of Romanesque and Gothic art. The figurines of angels, devils, cherubs, baskets, bouquets of flowers, foliage, garlands and bunches of grapes stand out, which in their conception denote the strong indigenous influence. These elements have been recognized as a masterpiece of 16th century viceregal architecture.

NONOHUALCA COMMUNITY MUSEUM

It exhibits archaeological pieces found in the surroundings of Tlalmanalco as well as relevant stone sculptures such as the effigy of Xochipilli that you can admire in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
