How did Monte Xanic come about?

In 1987, Hans Backhoff, passionate about viticulture, was in the Guadalupe Valley dreaming of a project to start a wine company that would serve the fine wine market and with its own personality. He found a hill near a small lake and knew that the vineyard of his dreams would grow there.

The Coras are a Mexican indigenous people that live predominantly in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco and Durango, whose language, Cora, is currently spoken by less than 30,000 people.

One of the most poetic words in the Cora language is "xanic", which means "flower that sprouts after the first rain" and Hans Backhoff could not have adopted a better term to identify his wine house.

The Monte Xanic vineyards are located in the Guadalupano wine corridor, in the Baja California Peninsula, about 15 km from the ocean and 400 meters above sea level, an unbeatable Mediterranean environment to produce high quality noble grapes.

One of the measures that favor the health of the vineyard and the quality of the Monte Xanic grape is the computerized irrigation control of the vines, with sensors located in the roots, which report on humidity levels and the need for irrigation.

Another strategy applied is the collection and quality control of the water used. The water used by Monte Xanic comes from several wells in the region, but it does not go directly to the vineyard.

The water from each well is conducted separately to a lake, where the discharge into the reservoir is controlled according to the quality of each source, especially regarding the level of concentration of salts. This ensures optimum quality water for the plantation.

What are the top-class reds from Monte Xanic?

A memorable Monte Xanic success came with Gran Ricardo, a limited edition red wine of 850 cases per vintage, named in honor of a great friend of the house. This great wine, the icon of the winery, was rated with 90 points by the famous magazine Wine Enthusiast, one of the leading international magazines in the sector.

The Gran Ricardo is the result of a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, and is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. It is garnet in color with ruby ​​tones, clean and bright.
