What is a cenote?

Millions of years ago the Yucatan peninsula emerged from the sea as a limestone rock plate where the existence of rivers is practically impossible.

Subsequently, over thousands of years, the rain pecks at this immense rock and the water seeps into the subsoil, where it forms true channels that in turn pierce the deepest layers. The cenotes are precisely the result of this process; They arise when the water of the subsoil is exposed when collapsing the cavities created by the underground currents.

There are small cenotes with the water mirror almost at ground level, or very large ones with a high “shot” between the ground and the water. Just as they have been and are today a source of water supply for the population, in the past they were considered the residence of the gods of water, and, therefore, an object of worship and veneration.
