Campeche is a green entity: its jungle and its sea, its lagoons and its rivers are of that color. In this geography full of life, the main attractions are the two million hectares of protected areas that are divided between water and land.

Campeche is currently divided into five natural regions: the coast; rivers, lagoons and waters; the sierra or Puuc; the jungle or Petén, and the valleys and plains or Los Chenes.

Its main rivers are Carmen, Champotón, Palizada and Candelaria, which generate various fishing resources that are a source of food and economic income for many Campechanos.

The lagoons are fifteen, six of fresh water, among them Silvituc, and nine of salt water, of which the Laguna de Terminos stands out.

As for the islands, Campeche has the Del Carmen, as well as the Arena, Arca and Jaina, rich in archaeological remains. As for protected natural areas, three of the five in the state represent one million eight hundred thousand hectares, which is equivalent to just over 32 percent of its surface. The largest and most important is Calakmul, decreed a biosphere reserve in 1989. Its flora is typical of the region: high, medium and low forest, sub-evergreen, and hydrophyte vegetation of akalchés and aguadas, whose most representative species are the Guayacán, mahogany and red wood.

You cannot miss Calakmul: we are sure that you will be surprised by its natural and archaeological wealth.

On the other hand, the Laguna de Terminos, a flora and fauna protection area decreed on June 6, 1994, has an area of 705,016 hectares. Today it is the estuarine lagoon system with the largest volume and surface area in the country. The mangroves are the most representative vegetation of the place, although there are associations of popal, reed, tular and sibal, as well as different types of forest, habitat of tigrillo, ocelot, raccoon and manatee. Likewise, it constitutes the nesting and refuge site for various species of birds, such as the jabirú stork; Reptiles include the boa constrictor, the green iguana, the pochitoque, chiquiguao and freshwater turtles, and the crocodile.

Other places of contact with nature are Los Petenes, Balam-Kin and Ría Celestún, which complement the system of protected natural areas of the entity. But you should also visit the Xmuch Haltún Botanical Garden (in the Baluarte de Santiago) and the Ecological Center of Campeche.

The above is just a sample of the importance that Campechanos give to nature. We open our hearts and our arms to offer you a pleasant stay, give us the opportunity to serve you as you deserve and remember that in Campeche magic, culture, nature and its population come together ... only you are missing. You are welcome.
